With the arrival of potato starts from ONC yesterday the 2011 growing season is now officially underway at the Bethel Community Garden. John (Johnny Zukes) Sargent, Leif Albertson, and Michael Callahan have been busy tilling and getting the rows ready, and most of the assignments have already been made.

The weather is supposed to be great this holiday weekend, so come on down and join the fun. John and Michael are already in the ground with potatoes, seeds and various starts. The earlier you get planted better you'll be able to take advantage of our short growing season.

Hometown seeds has a great variety of seeds We all know the benefits of having our own vegetable garden! There are too many benefits not to. You cannot get the same nutritional value when you buy your vegetables at a store. Vegetables are rich in vitamins, dietary minerals, fiber and carbohydrates. Vegetables can also be a great source of protein. Hometown Seeds takes great pride in all of their seeds and invites you to check their large selection of vegetable seeds.

Survival Seeds have become one of their best sellers. They offer you peace of mind in knowing you have emergency food storage. It’s wise to have some extra food set aside for tough economic times that last for a short time, but what if the problem is prolonged? Now you can feel safe knowing that you have long term food storage. We like to call this “forever food storage”. Because these survival seeds are 100% non-hybrid, 100% non-GMO, you can save seeds from your harvest and have plenty to replant the next year.

Thanks Hometown Seeds for supporting our community gardening efforts!

The Bethel Community Garden’s inaugural year was a huge success. If not by the fact that we garnered a nice award for our combined efforts, but also that we are on a roll for our second consecutive year!

"Fresh vegetables are a rare and pricey luxury for many of us here in Bethel," says community (master) gardener John Sargent,  That is until we harvest the fruits of our labor here at our community garden."

John and many others were very successful last year “It was very tasty and fresh,” said this Bethel resident, whose family of five were among those who took home fresh veggies from Bethel's Community Garden last year. John planted zucchini cabbage, potatoes, and a host of other vegetables which later made their way to the dining room table, as well as the tables of many local friends.

John harvested so many Zucchinis that he's now going by the name -- "Johnny Zukes."

Johnny Zuccs"Fresh produce is a luxury here in Bethel," he said It is “very expensive at both AC and Swanson's. Though we always have to rely on lower 48 produce, he said they’re never as good as the garden’s greens."

It does feels good to see vegetables growing in your very own garden. It takes a bit of effort and planning, but the rewards of fresh produce are worth the effort.

With the help of Tim Meyers and his tractor, the Bethel Community Garden is now swinging into full planting mode for its second consecutive season. Sign up for your plot, bring your shovels and work gloves, mulch seeds and starts.
